The Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) has officially released a new, limited-edition $50 commemorative banknote to celebrate its historic 50th Golden Jubilee.
The banknote was officially launched at the Heritage Park Hotel Conference Room in the presence of distinguished guests, financial sector leaders, and the CBSI Board of Directors. Prime Minister Honourable Mathew Cooper Wale and Minister for Finance and Treasury Honourable Gordon Darcy Lilo headlined the event.
Declaring the new banknote legal tender, Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo remarked that the note marks a monumental milestone in CBSI’s history. He emphasized that the banknote reflects the resilience, progressive evolution, and modernization of the Central Bank’s functions and responsibilities.
CBSI Governor Dr. Luke Forau welcomed the release, noting its deeper significance for the nation.
“This banknote represents not only a historic milestone for the Central Bank, but also its creativity, resilience, and progressive development,” Governor Forau stated. “It recognizes the economic contributions of all sectors and individuals who work together to strengthen and prosper our culturally diverse nation.”
He added: “As we commemorate this historic Golden Jubilee, it is fitting that our commemorative banknote reflects the strength and unity of our shared values. By featuring the journey from traditional to modern money alongside the CBSI building, we honor qualities that can inspire future generations and contribute meaningfully to our socio-economic development over the next 50 years and beyond.”
Key Features of the New Banknote
The commemorative $50 banknote maintains the familiar size, green color palette, and core artistic patterns of the existing circulating $50 paper note, but introduces advanced polymer technology and updated security elements:
- Substrate & Front Design: Printed on a durable polymer substrate, the front incorporates a striking new transparent window featuring the head of an eagle and the text “CBSI 50” positioned above the official CBSI Bokolo logo.
- Reverse Design: The back of the note features the Central Bank building and visually illustrates the historical evolution of currency in the Solomon Islands—tracing the timeline from traditional shell money to modern digital payments.
Produced in limited quantities, this commemorative note is expected to become a highly valued collector’s item and a cornerstone of the Solomon Islands’ numismatic heritage. CBSI encourages members of the public to handle the new note with care to preserve its cleanliness and durability.
The polymer $50 commemorative banknote is now available to the public through commercial banks and ATMs nationwide. As part of its commitment to financial literacy, CBSI will roll out public educational materials regarding the security features via its official website and public outreach programs.
