Press Release 05/2023: CBSI to conduct Capital Market Survey next week

The Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) is preparing to conduct a major survey on the domestic Capital Market with the aim of developing and enhancing this area for future economic growth and financial stability.

Solomon Islands currently has a very narrow and limited secondary market where only few groups participate, hence the need to assess and understand the current status and potential of the market.
One of the overall objectives of this initial survey by CBSI is to determine whether there is a need and demand for both the primary and secondary markets in Solomon Islands. CBSI is aiming to develop a framework to establish an efficient domestic capital market based on responses from this survey.

“The survey will target specific respondents only but the responses hopefully can open up more opportunities and areas to further look into regarding our domestic market”.

“CBSI will be targeting mainly the Financial and Credit Institutions, Microfinance Institutions, Relevant Government Ministries, State Own Enterprises (SOEs), Corporations/Companies, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and selected individuals”.

A capital market is a financial market where financial instruments such as long-term debt or equity-backed securities are bought and sold. This special market brings buyers and sellers together to trade stocks, bonds, currencies, and other financial assets and is categorized or consists of both primary and secondary markets. Primary market deals with the issuance and sale of securities to purchasers directly by the issuer, whilst secondary market is where investors buy and sell securities, they already own.

The survey will formally commence on Tuesday 30th May 2023.
